Have you ever been in the middle of a WOD, laughing with your friends as you sweat through a fun workout and thought, “Man, I wish they had things like this when I was a kid!”? Well luckily for kids today, there is a program called CrossFit Kids and starting this month,JP CrossFit is joining in on the fun! A Crossfit kids program is a natural extension of our fun, inviting community . The main goal of any CrossFit Kids program is to have FUN and be HEALTHY in a safe and supportive environment—just like adult CrossFit! These goals are even more important for kids to promote healthy growth and development as well as teach important life lessons about hard work, sportsmanship, and help kids learn that exercise and healthy eating is fun. We hear too often of schools cutting back on physical education or exercise being used as a form of punishment in gym class. We see school lunches making it hard for kids to make healthy choices. Both of these factors are contributing to a rise in the obesity epidemic in this country. We also hear stories of bullying and unsupportive conduct in school that kids face every day. CrossFit kids’ mission is to change those norms and lead by example. JPCF is committed to helping build a healthier community and this new addition to our programming is one way to accomplish this goal.
CrossFit kids programs utilize the same method of “constantly varied functional movement executed at high intensity” that we see in regular CrossFit classes. What is different is that for kids the focus is mainly on having fun through fitness by playing games and engaging in activities that promote safe movement. Kids as young as 3 and teens as old as 18 can be a part of the program and at each developmental level the program is tailored to the skill set appropriate for the age and ability of the child.
We hope that you are as excited as we are to start this new program. We’re having a meet and greet session on Saturday, January 21st from 1:30 to 2:30! This event is specifically for current JPCF members who have children that might like to participate in the program (the program will be opened up to children of non-members in the near future). Please come on in to learn more, hear what we have to offer, and have a little fun! We are asking that people let us know if you are going to attend the meet and greet, so please RSVP by emailing Meghan by Friday 1/20 at 8pm if you plan to attend.
