Falling into Fitness with Food!

By Chris Doty | In Articles, Challenges | on September 26, 2016

Friends! Fall is here, which means pumpkin spice lattes, Halloween candy, and, just around the corner, more apple pie and mashed potatoes than you can shake a turkey leg at.

Before all of that holiday craziness gets here, we want to help you learn how to make the best food choices possible. To that end, over the next few weeks, we’ll be running a Whole30-style nutrition challenge to help you improve your fitness, eat right, and be prepared to make healthy choices for the coming, food-filled holidays.

What will the challenge involve?

In brief, you’ll be eating a strict paleo diet (specifically, the Whole30 model) for four weeks, and earning points by complying with the diet, getting to the gym, and making sure you recover sufficiently by sleeping enough at night.

For the purposes of this challenge, you’ll be focusing on food quality, not food quantity. You won’t have to weigh or measure a single thing!

You’ll also be placed into a team with some of your fellow athletes to help keep you motivated and on track. You can set up a Facebook group, having weekly check-ins, or even do meal swaps!

What are the dates of the challenge?

The challenge will run from Monday, October 3rd to Sunday, November 6th.

The first week won’t involve changing your diet, though. You’ll just start paying more attention to what you eat, and getting ready for the challenge to start. Every day, you’ll get an email with some more information about paleo, Whole30, and tips and tricks to get you ready.

The actual changes will go into effect on Monday, October 10th (which is, conveniently, a holiday for many of you, which gives you plenty of time to cook and prep food).

You keep saying Whole30—what’s that?

Basically, a strict version of the paleo diet that focuses on being totally compliant with the dietary recommendations for a whole month. We’ll get the most benefit by eliminating not only the bad foods that you eat, but also by eliminating the idea of cheat meals.

Okay, then what’s the paleo diet?

In broad terms, it means eating food that humans evolved to eat, and are thus optimal for our bodies. Humans are dietary generalists, which means there’s still A LOT of delicious foods you can eat, but you’ll be cutting out grains, legumes, dairy, and added sugar. We’ll provide specific details after you’re signed up to help guide you!

How will I earn points?

In order to make this easy to keep track of, we’ve limited the amount of counting you’ll have to do to keep track. Here’s how you’ll earn points each day:

  • — Eating in 100% compliance with Whole30: +5 points
  • — Coming in for the daily WOD : +1 point
  • — Sleeping at least 7 hours: +1 point

What will my team win?

Because people have a lot of feelings about food, we want to set you up for success without obsessing too much over which team has the most points, so prizes will be present, but non-monetary.

What’s this cost?

Zero Australian dollars.

I’m in! How do I sign up?

Send an email to chris@jpcrossfit.com and let him know you’re in! THE DEADLINE TO SIGN UP IS SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2ND AT 8PM!
